INSIDE THE SHED
Shedman invites people into the shed to remember in tranquillity and to create poetry and poetic narratives for themselves as part of experimental interactions, focused on the shed, its location or event theme, and their connections with them.
THE SHED AS WORKSHOP
Shedman runs innovative al fresco poetry/creative writing workshops. The products of the workshop process may be presented online and in a printed anthology. The texts can be very moving and create a store of emotion specific to place, time and project.
THE SHED AS MICRO–VENUE
As well as presenting his own work, local poets and writers – from youthful rappers to seventy-year-old sonneteers – gather at the shed as a ‘base’ to present and perform. Other professional artists, writers and musicians often drop by to give off-the-cuff performances.
THE SHED AS WORKSTATION
Shedman loves to have a commission to write as part of his residency. He can write to a specific brief or can respond to his daily experiences. He has been commissioned to write for major architectural and environmental projects as well as for newspapers and magazines.
SHED OUTPUTS AND ARCHIVE
Shedman records his encounters and explorations on video, stills and audio (he happens to be an award winning video director too), so creating an audio-visual archive of the project and the process.
A theme, or set of themes, often emerges from the interactions perhaps catching a local mood, spirit of place or burning concern. Shedman is also happy to adapt his activities to fit a particular theme if you have one.
ENGAGEMENT WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
People often make the most of Shedman by using him to run workshops in local schools, colleges, care homes or hospitals. Shedman has special experience working in healthcare and has recently co-authored Our Storeys – Art and Poetry in Healthcare with artist Sue Ridge. Participants create shedloads of writing that can be used in an anthology and Shedman can help with its design and production if needs be.
THE SHED ATTRACTOR
The shed is a fantastic attractor getting attention for your project, event or festival. Shedman's shed becomes a focal point for local networking and interest, creating a real buzz and building momentum.
People who are interested in sheds come along as do those keen on reading and writing—poetry in particular. Many of the most intriguing interactions occur by a kind of shedendipity as passers–by are challenged to answer that all important question – what's the first shed you ever remember? Tyros and wannabees step across the threshold of the shed to 'come out' as poets and writers.
